Where should I put my dog's bed?

After you have finally picked out a bed for your dog, you are going to need to find a good place for it in your home. Initially, dog beds are simply meant to be comfortable places for your dog to sleep. You want to find a bed that is going to be comfortable for your pet, possibly good for your pet’s joints (if the dog is aging) and, hopefully, will be both durable and easy to clean.

However, how well the dog bed works for your pet also depends on placement as much as it does the bed itself. Where the bed is placed in your home can have an effect on how well the bed works for your dog. Here are several things to consider when you decide where to put your dog bed.

Places for Dog Beds

·        Where Does Your Dog Sleep?

If your dog already has a sleeping area they enjoy in the house, it may be a good idea to keep the dog bed there. Your dog likely chose that area for a reason (assuming it is not atop a bed or couch), and unless it is in the way of something you need, that area would be a good place to keep the bed. It will also help reduce the amount of training you need to do to get your dog to sleep there.

·        Where Are The Windows?

One important factor in placing your dog bed is whether or not the windows are going to radiate sun on your pet. In general, you do not want your dog to be subjected to the heat that can come from a window, even in winter. Dogs bodies can heat up quite quickly, and dogs themselves have no way of cooling down fast enough to reduce dehydration or sickness. It is very unlikely you will badly hurt your pet if you keep it in plain view of an open window (dogs can always get up and walk away from dog beds) but the dog will be uncomfortable and/or the bed will not be in use if it is being showered in too much heat.

·        How Convenient is the Placement for You?

Dogs have an easier time being comfortable and adjusting to their surroundings when everything is kept the same. They prefer stability. If the dog bed is in your way, then you may be forced to move it someday, and if you are that can cause instability for your dog. Once again, in your household it may not matter too much, but there is no reason to get a dog bed for your puppy’s comfort only to cause discomfort by moving it around often.

Placement of the Bed

Where your dog bed ends up is not going to have a huge effect on your dog’s enjoyment. Assuming your dog is not locked in the bed, not even leaving it under a hot window is going to be much of a problem as the dog will simply move. But dog beds are designed for convenience and comfort, and poor placement can take away from those feelings, thus reducing the effectiveness of the bed. So make sure you think about where you are putting the dog bed before you keep it there.
